If I had to pick one thing that stood out to me from this winter engagement photo session, it’d be that Melanie and Chris have truly found the right person to share their lives with.

Taking photos for the first time is nerve-wracking, and doing it outside on a cold December day makes it twice as hard to look comfortable.

And yet, five minutes into the session and they were laughing, embracing, and being playful like they’ve done this a million times.

It was beautiful to capture how they relaxed and enjoyed each other’s presence even in this unusual situation of having a man they had never met prior following them around with a camera.

While planned poses are often needed to capture details like an engagement ring, I encourage couples I’m photographing to try natural motions (hand holding, hugging their partner from behind, etc.) or even telling me a story dear to them. The less you’re thinking, Am I standing right? Should I turn my face? What should i do with my hands?, the better.

It more genuinely brings out emotions, smiles, and the dynamic between the couple.

Even Elizabeth park without the flowers, green grass, or sunshine was lovely. It was serene without anyone else walking around, and made for a more intimate session. Looking back at their photos, I love the contrast between the park’s sleeping nature and their joyful expressions and warm embraces.

So, in case you’re considering to do couple’s photos or even an engagement photoshoot, just keep in mind that it’s never easy being in front of the camera for the first time, but it makes it a heck of a lot easier when you have the right partner by your side.

Congrats Melanie and Chris!!
